They have banned gum on our school campus and it is taken very seriously, but why is that?

Some other schools in the USA have also banned gum on school campuses like the Downey Unified School district in California. Articles have also been made like there was the article on Knox County News in California which was called Student At Center Of Gum-Chewing Suit Speaks Out On Harassment, Advocacy As Judge Rules which is about Knox county that a lawsuit was made because a student that went to the Knox county high school had a disability called misophonia. Misophonia is a disability where if you hear loud noises it bothers you and might lead you to extreme distress or a physical reaction when you hear certain sounds. So the student filed a lawsuit because she thought that her disability was not being taken seriously. So these accusations caused gum to be banned at the Knox school and many other schools in the area.

Some people like chewing gum in class because it helps them focus and do better academically. But there are side effects from chewing gum like you might have jaw pain, headaches, diarrhea, and some tooth decay.

I think that the ban on gum is unnecessary, because I think that the rule should be that if you get caught spitting out gum where it’s not supposed to go then you should get in trouble.

Most schools in the USA have banned chewing gum because of these reasons. And these may be the reasons that our school has banned gum.
