On Dec. 5, 2024, in Mendocino CA a large earthquake hit at 10:44 a.m., causing a tsunami warning to be issued around California. The epicenter was closest to Eureka, but the shaking was also felt all the way here in Mendocino.

For a lot of students it was their first earthquake. I interviewed some of the younger grades and a lot of them said it was actually more fun than scary or a mix of both. One 6th grader even thought he was having a seizure! Some people thought it was just someone shaking the tables because it luckily was quite weak. Something quite odd was that all of the people I interviewed were all in math class at the same time. A lot of people were more nervous at first, while some actually had a fun time during it.

When it happened I was in math class and my classmate Cassidy said “I think there’s an earthquake!” and then the whole room began to shake while we hid under the tables. Everyone was then evacuated outside where we waited in lines while maintenance checked to make sure it was safe to go in again. I actually had a lot of fun during the earthquake and sort of wished it lasted longer. Luckily, everyone was safe and there were no deaths or injuries reported.
