The Volleyball A team of the Mendocino K-8 school is coming to an end of their season, and they have been crushing it. In middle school there are 3 teams, A, B, and C. It’s like a pyramid, it starts with a C team, which is usually sixth graders. Then, you move to the B team, which is usually seventh graders. Then finally, A team, aka the top of the pyramid, which is filled with the top players.

They have only lost two games and were almost undefeated at home, but unfortunately lost to Anderson Valley. They’ve gone to two tournaments so far and are holding their ground against other teams who have more advantages than us . Such as bigger schools, more experienced players, high funding teams, etc.

Reflections on A Tournament
By Lucy H.
On Friday, Sept. 27, 2024, Mendocino K-8 School’s Volleyball A Team left for their first tournament. Unfortunately, they ended up losing, getting sixth place out of 16. The team was very disappointed.
“I was really sad,” said Scarlett Fosse, one of the team’s setters, “Because I felt like we could’ve beat the last team.” The last game they played would determine if they would continue to play, but to their disappointment, they lost by only a few points.
The tournament wasn’t all bad though. Many players mentioned that they thought they and the team were playing pretty well, but that the other teams were older and better. One of the team’s members, Cassidy Clark, noted that the Mendo team was playing worse towards the end, as a result of being too tired to play.
All in all, the players felt like that they wouldn’t play well or win any games, and they were surprised when they won games and were impressed with their overall place in the tournament. All the members of the team thought that they themselves played well, and were happy with their overall performance. The tournament left the players feeling sad about their loss, while still viewing it as a good experience, with well played games and a good effort.
This year’s A team only has 8th graders on it:Serena G , Gabi M , Abby L, Scarlett F, Lucy H, Zippy R, Cassidy C, and Hannah H. There is only one coach, Eva Katz who has been coaching for as long as she can remember. Most of them are planning to play in high school; others are undetermined because unfortunately in high school soccer season is the same as volleyball season.

I went and interviewed these lovely ladies. They all had different but similar views on their teamwork. They all agreed they work wonderfully together, though, they could talk more, be more aggressive, and something as easy as “simple” communication. “We only have eight players but we work like were one” – Cassidy Clark.
